I knew Minnie Pwerle but it was not until after she passed on that I realised the real power of her paintings. Every time I look at her painting now it makes me smile as if her spirit is reaching out to me – her strength of character, her lack of inhibition, her love of her country and her belief in her Aboriginality talk to me.

Lorna Fencer Napurrula

Lorna’s strength as a woman of substance and her high ranking within her tribe is reflected in her paintings. She appeared to have no boundaries or fears because she had the confidence in herself and her history. The first time I saw one of her paintings I was fascinated with her use of colour and her layering technique. Her body of work is very significant as a guide to the younger emerging women artists.
