Re Coil Change & Exchange in Coiled Fibre Art
This publication is presented by Artback NT Arts Touring, presenting the major touring exhibition Re Coil: Change & Exchange in Coiled Fibre Art.
As the title suggests Re Coil aims to surprise and challenge the audience by revealing some of the revolutionary developments in contemporary fibre which have been quietly unfolding in some of the most remote parts of Australia.
The technique of coiling is central to these recent changes, which also involve the revitalisation of customary basketry.
Coiling is a classic basketry method in which a coil or core of fibre is continually worked in a spiral motion to complete a form.
A feature of the new basketry is the ongoing creative exchange between Indigenous and non Indigenous Australian textile artists with new ideas and materials continually being explored.
Re Coil attempts to capture the work of twelve Indigenous and three non-Indigenous artists who, over the years have worked in association and collaboration with their Aboriginal peers.
If you have enjoyed this short article, Sabine Haider from Central Art recommends to read the book Re Coil Change and Exchange in Coiled Fibre Art. The photographs of the baskets are simple amazing. This book is beautifully presented (additional image shows book image).
