The painting depicts the seed of the pencil yam plant which is a principal food source gathered by Aboriginal women from Alhalkere region of Utopia in Central Australia.

The women pay homage to the spirit of the yam plant in their awelye ceremonies to ensure perpetual germination of its seeds.
