The painting refers to the Tingari Ancestors, who were a group of mythical beings in the Dreamtime. They travelled over vast tracts of land through the Western Desert, creating and shaping important sites, performing ceremonies and rituals, which are of great significance to the Pintupi Aboriginal people of the Western Desert.
The Tingari women followed the Tingari men and were accompanied by novices. It is the Tingari men and women's travels and adventures that are enshrined in a number of song cycles.
