Central Art Logo

As an Aboriginal Art Gallery it was important to us to have a logo to represent not just our brand, but to be a work of art in itself so we asked renowned Aboriginal artist Malcolm Maloney Jagamarra if he would like to create the new design for Central Art.

Some weeks later Malcolm brought this image to us and explained the meaning.

The symbol on the left is a churinga (tjurunga) a sacred object owners by a clan that is associated with legends, chants and ceremonies –this is the foundation of the Dreaming stories that we paint.

The white dots are representations of the many stories in our art.

The two images on the right are symbols of boomerangs. They also represent the two letters in our business name – Central Art.

The C shape symbolizes a ‘throwing boomerang’. (Our artwork migrates). The other shape symbolizes a ‘non-returning boomerang'. (Our artwork is retained). Each painting takes the same journey as our boomerangs.

Malcolm put the three icons within a circle to represent the completeness of the cycle and used natural and traditional ochre colours.

When asked how he came up with the design Malcolm said that it was a communal affair. He discussed the designs with his Warlpiri family and he had to gain permission to incorporate significant aboriginal icons in the design. Every family member contributed to the discussion and design until they were happy that the logo reflected the Central Art business - a true reflection of the Aboriginal custom.
