Mountain Devil Lizard by Kathleen Petyarre

The painting depicts the ancestral tracks of the Arnkerrth aboriginal glossary button.
The Mountain Devil Lizard is one of the most significant Dreamings and is attached to Atnangker aboriginal glossary button - the artist's homeland.

The defined lines branching from the centre of the artwork explains as follows:

  • The left hand top corner- depicts the Dreaming track of the Arnkerrth, as she performs her dance
  • The right hand top corner- refers to track the men continue on towards Tennant Creek and the Emu Dreaming. Half way along this track is the stopping point for women
  • The bottom right hand corner- depicts the track to the Yam Dreaming, Alhalker aboriginal glossary button country
  • The shape depicts the Rockhole, important Dreaming country for Arnkerrth

Certain skin groups own this Totem and is celebrated in their Awelye aboriginal glossary button ceremonies. Through body painting, song lines and dance cycle they re-enact Arnkerrth.
