Star Dreaming by Alma Nungarrayi Granites

The painting refers to the Dreaming place of Yanjirlpiri (Mt. Nicker) west of Yuendumu in Central Australia.


The painting tells the story through Aboriginal iconography of the flying ants being flushed out of their mounds (mingkirri ) when it rains heavily.


Symbols illustrated are: -

  • The wavy doted lines represent the pathway
  • The short doted lines represents flying ants
  • The circles between the wavy lines represent the ceremonial sites
  • The larger circles represent flying ants ant mounds
