The painting depicts the curling pattern of the Mountain Devil Lizard's skin. In the Aboriginal Dreamtime Stories it is believed the lizard collected then deposited these ochre colours throughout the Atnangkere country, Utopia, Aboriginal Art Regions of Central Australia.
Aboriginal people use these colours for body painting in their ceremonies.
Some members of the Petyarre family bear markings on their skin, similar to that found on the Mountain Devil Lizard.
