Rock Spirits

Lightning Couple Hunting by Edward Blitner

The painting depicts the Lightning couple with fishing basket (plants, eggs, fish) and dilly bag. The woven fishing baskets and dilly bags were made from twisted bark fibres -used for gathering food.

The Lightning spirit Namarrkon (mimi spirit) lives above the clouds and controls the electrical storms, associated with the monsoon weather in the Top End of the Northern Territory in Australia. The Lightning spirit also makes sure aspects of tribal law are not broken, otherwise he strikes fearlessly with bolts of thunder and lightning as punishment.

Mimi spirit figures are depicted in rock art and bark paintings.
