Night Birdby Elsie Napanangka GranitesThe artwork depicted on this silk print is titled Night Bird Dreaming. It tells the Dreaming of a sacred place on Warlpiri country called Janyinki. This is a consistent theme in Elsie's artworks and comes from her father's side. Janyinki is where traditional ceremonies are performed. Janyinki is also significant to Warlpiri custodians as a habitat for Jukurrpa creatures including the rare night parrot. |
ArtistElsie Napanangka Granites was born in 1959 and comes from Yuendumu Community approximately 290km from Alice Springs in Central Australia. Elsie is an active member of the Yuendumu Community working in many of the Aboriginal owned and governed organisations within the community. Elsie paints with Warlukurlangu Artists and uses her Dreamings throughout her art. One of her regularly depicted Dreamings comes from her father, Jayinki Jukurrpa which is related to Janyinki country close to Yuendumu. Although this Jukurrpa is often associated with men’s ceremonial activity in that country it is also related to sites where women travelled to collect bush foods. Janyinki is Elsie’s traditional country. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions of Aboriginal Art. |
