Goanna Dreamingby Linda Quinn NakamarraThis painting depicts goanna, which is a totemic animal as well as a principal food source for Aboriginal people living in Central Australia. The concentric circles represent the mating burrow of the goanna. |
ArtistLinda Quinn Nakamarra was born in 1979 and comes from Arrungke in Mount Allan (Yuelamu) in Central Australia. Linda is an Anmatyerre woman and has always been interested and exposed to contemporary Aboriginal art. As a young girl Linda became inspired by her cultures art by watching her grandmother paint. At the age of 16 Linda began to experiment herself as has been an artist ever since. Linda’s paintings depict bush tucker, goanna and kangaroo. In the paintings which Central Art has featured Linda has focused on Goanna Dreaming. Goanna is one of Linda’s totems as well as a principle food source (bush tucker) for Aboriginal people living in Central Australia. Still today many families continue to go on bush hunting trips to catch bush tucker in particular goanna. Linda uses traditional iconography such as concentric circles within her paintings to represent the mating burrow of the goanna. |
