Lorraine Nakamarra Yungut

Lorraine Nakamarra Yungut was born in 1974 and comes from Papunya Community in the Western Desert. Lorraine is the daughter of famous Western Desert artists Walangkura Napanangka and Johnny Yungut Tjupurrula. Both have been represented extensively through Papunya Tula Artists Corporation in Central Australia and there art can be found in many collections throughout Australia.

Lorraine lived at Papunya with her family and attended the local school there. In 1994 Lorraine moved back to her parent’s home country of Kintore. Lorraine along with her sisters Debra Young Nakamarra and Katherine Nakamarra Marshall who are also talented emerging artists were taught stories by the family and began painting under the guidance of their mother, Walangkura. Initially they would watch their mother at work and then later assisting her.

In recent years Lorraine has started to paint in her own right and whilst you can see the influence of her mother’s style which is evident in her artworks she has added her own individual expression into her paintings. Her artworks are strikingly bold and share stories associated with Women’s business and ceremony. They also include her extended knowledge of sacred places where there is deep spiritual significance for Pintupi women who use these sacred places for ceremonies and to teach young women their Dreamtime and culture.

Lorraine continues to live in Kintore with her own family.
