Emu Dreamingby Margaret Nangala Gallagher

This particular site features in this artwork is of Yankirri Jukurrpa orEmu Dreaming at Ngarlikurlangu. The Yankirri travelled to the rockhole at Ngarlikurlangu in search of water. This Dreaming belongs to the Nangala and Nampijinpa women and the Jangala and Jampijinpa men. In contemporary Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography is used to represent the Jukurrpa, associated sites and elements including plants and animals. Emu's are usually represented by their footprints which are arrow like shapes that show them walking around at Ngarlikurlangu. In the Dreamtime there was a fight at Ngarlikurlangu between an Emu ancestor and an Australian Bustard ancestor over sharing Yankirri. There is also a dance for this Dreaming which is performed during initiations ceremonies.

Artist

Margaret Nangala Gallagher was born in 1967 and comes from Yuendumu Community approximately 300km from Alice Springs in Central Australia. She is the daughter of Pauline Napangardi Gallagher, an artist for Warlukurlangu Artists. Once Margaret completed school she relocated to Nyirripi with her family. Margaret has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists since 2007. Margaret enjoys painting with her mother as it is an opportunity to share Jukurrpa. Margaret paints Yankirri Jukurrpa (Emu Dreaming) which has been passed down to her from her father's side.
