Ngapa Jukurrpaby Marissa Napanangka AndersonThe site depicted in this painting is Pirlinyarnu just outside of Yuendumu in Central Australia. The owners of the Ngapa Dreaming site are the Nangala and Nampijinpa women and the Jangala and Jampijinpa men. The Dreaming tells of two Jangala's, rainmakers, who sang the rain and unleashed a giant storm which collided with another storm. A Kirrkarlanji (Brown Falcon) carried the storm across the country from Karlipirnpa, a ceremonial site for the water Dreaming. Along the way the storm passed through Juntiparnta, a site owned by the Jampijinpa men. The storm eventually became too heavy for the Falcon and it dropped the water at Pirlinyarnu, where it formed an enormous claypan. A soakage exists in this place today where whenever it rains hundreds of bush ducks flock to it. |
ArtistMarissa Napanangka Anderson was born in 1992 in Katherine in the Northern Territory. She grew up in Lajamanu, a small Aboriginal community. Once married, she relocated to Yuendumu Community, approximately 300km from Alice Springs in Central Australia. Marissa began painting in 2011 for Warlukurlangu Artist, located at Yuendumu. Marissa likes to use patterns and colour in her artwork. She paints Ngapa Jukurrpa or Water Dreaming which she inherited from her mothers family. Her artworks directly relate to the land, its features including plants and animals. Her earlier works featured traditional Aboriginal iconography and symbols however this has evolved into artworks that feature pattern work and lots of colour. |
