Bush Tomato Dreamingby Melissa Napangardi Williams

The Wanakiji Jukurrpa or Bush Tomato Dreaming travels through Yaturlu. Wanakiji grows in open spinifex country and is a small prickly plant with purple flowers that bears green fleshy fruit. The seeds are removed with a small wooden spoon called Kajalarra. The fruit then can be eaten raw or threaded onto skewers called Turlturrpa and then cooked over a fire. In contemporary Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography can be used to represent the Jukurrpa, particular sites and other elements.

Artist

Melissa Napangardi Williams comes from Yuendumu Community approximately 300km from Alice Springs in Central Australia. She is the daughter of Alice Napurrurla Nelson and Warren Japanangka Williams. Melissa has been working closely with Warlukurlangu Artist, a local Aboriginal art centre based in Yuendumu since 2004. Her paintings depict the various Dreamings that have been passed down to her. From her father she paints Bush Tomato Dreaming, Bush Potato Dreaming and Bush Banana Dreaming. From her mother she paints Goanna Dreaming. Melissa uses a variety of different colours with a modern interpretation of traditional iconography and symbols.
