Barrow Creekby Mervyn RubuntjaThis small watercolour artwork depicts the mountain range found near Barrow Creek in Central Australia. |
ArtistMervyn Rubuntja was born in 1958 and comes from the Alice Springs region. His mother Cynthia Obitja was a Western Arrernte woman and his father the late Wenten Rubuntja Perngarte a famous artist. His father was an important role model for Mervyn, as a senior lawman and respected member of his community. He worked hard to improve Aboriginal rights and the protection of land with the Central Land Council. Mervyn naturally followed in his fathers foot steps painting in the watercolour style. At 13 years old the family relocated to Hermannsburg Community where he first saw watercolour paintings. In 2006 Mervyn was invited to submit a painting for the "Mornington Pennisula Works on Paper Exhibitions". Mervyn was a finalist at the 2008 NATSIA Awards in Darwin and in 2013 he was invited to participate at the seminar "Presences in the Art of Rex Battarbee and Albert Namatjira" at the State Library of NSW. Mervyn has participated in many exhibitions and his works are held in several art collections. |
