Warna Jukurrpaby Patricia Nakamarra Oldfield

The place depicted in this artwork is Ngama which is located south of Yuendumu Community in Central Australia. This Dreaming belongs to the Nakamarra and Napurrurla women and the Jakamarra and Japurrurla men. The Dreaming describes the journey of Yarripiri, an ancestral Warna (Snake). He travelled through the land. Yarripiri was very sad as his family had left him behind. He was blind and crippled but he was determined to follow and search for them although he had to be carried. This job fell to Kurdungurlu or the ceremonial police of the Dreaming the Nangala and Nampijinpa women and the Jangala and Jampijinpa men. Where Yarripiri's tail slumped and touched the ground creeks were formed. Yarripiri tracks and paths are often represented in paintings by arc shapes or curved lines.

Artist

Patricia Nakamarra Oldfield was born in 1982 and comes from Yuendumu Community, approximately 300km from Alice Springs in Central Australia. She is the daughter of two Warlukurlangu Artists artists so she has always been exposed to painting and artworks. She and her husband Sebastin Jangala Robertson, a fellow artist with Warlukurlangu Artists are very active and positive members of the community and art centre. Both are involved in a youth development program with Mt Theo. Patricia has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists since 2001. Patricia paints stories and Dreamings which are closely related to her traditional country. Warna Jukurrpa (Snake Dreaming) is the main focus of her artworks, this Dreaming was passed down to her through her father's family.
