Apple Bushby Rosie PwerleThis artwork reveals the geography of the Apple Bush as well as the artists intimate knowledge of significant places. The Apple bush is also known as Mulga apple, which is bush tucker food for Aboriginal people in central Australia. It grows on the end of the Mulga branches. Aborigines eat them raw or cook them in hot earth. Mulga trees grow in flat country and at the foot of hills. |
ArtistRosie Pwerle was born c. 1950 and began painting in the late nineties. Rosie comes from large extended family of artists. Her sister, Lena Pwerle is also a well-known painter and senior custodian of their country. Her brother Louie, who is now deceased, was a talented painter and sculptor. Rosie worked in the medium of batik along with over eighty other women from Utopia, but has since transitioned to painting. Her work are held in private collections and have been included in many exhibitions both in Australia and internationally. |
