Conkerberry Dreamingby Roxella Napangardi MarshallConkerberry or Marnikiji is a small black fruit that is keenly preferred and is harvested after the rain. It grows on bright green bushes that form large clumps along creek lines. The country associated with this Dreaming is at Lurnpakurlangu, near Mount Doreen to the west of Yuendumu. This Dreaming belongs to the Napanangka/Napangardi women and the Japanangka/Japangardi men. One story associated with this Dreaming is that of two snakes of the Japangardi/Japanangka skin group that were travelling between Lurnpakurlangu and the nearby hill of Yapakurlangu. They were looking for lovers - women of the Nampijinpa/Napurrurla skin groups as they travelled. The two snakes entered the ground at the base of two Manikiji trees at Yapakurlangu that are sacred to men. Today a small edible snake is found living in the branches of the Marnikiji bush. |
