Women's Ceremonyby Sally Butler NapurrulaThis small artwork uses a traditional colour scheme to depict women's ceremonies. Ochre rocks were and continue to be used in creating a natural paint used to ceremonial activities. The rocks of various colours are ground down into a powder and a little water, this creates a paste which is used to decorate the upper body, breasts, arms and chest during ceremonies. The painting uses concentric circles to depict important sacred places where ceremonial are carried out. The background of layered curved lines illustrates the designs used to decorate the body. |
ArtistSally Butler Napurrula was born in 1972 and comes from Papunya Community in the Western Desert. She has kinship connections with Tjukula Community and often visits communities between Kintore and Docker River near the NT/SA/WA border.
She began painting through an IAD literacy course in 1986 and has continued to explore and develop her artistic style and talent. She has worked with the Jukurrpa group in Alice Springs.
