Ngapa Jukurrpaby Shanna Napanangka WilliamsThis small painting depicts the site of Puyurru, west of Yuendumu in Central Australia. It is a significant place for Shanna and her family. Puyurru is usually dry creek beds. The Jukurrpa talks of two Jangala men who were rainmakers, they would sing the rain, unleashing a giant storm. The storm travelled across the country initially travelling with Pamapardu (Termite). At a place called Warlura, a gecko called Yumariyumari blew the storm on. Bolts of lightning shot out at Wirnpa and Kanaralji. At this point the Dreaming track also includes the Kurdukurdu Mangkurdu Jukurrpa (Children of the Clouds Dreaming). The Water Dreaming built hills at Ngamangama using baby clouds and also stuck long pointy clouds into the ground at Jukajuka, where they can still be seen today as rock formations. The Termite Dreaming continues along. In contemporary Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography is used to represent the Dreaming. Short dashes are used to represent Mangkurdu (Clouds), and longer flowing lines represent flood waters. Small circles are used to represent water soakages and river beds. |
ArtistShanna Napanangka Williams is an artist from Yuendumu Community, which is located approximately 3 hours from Alice Springs in Central Australia. Shanna is a Warlpiri woman with the primary focus of her paintings situated on the sacred site of Puyurru which is to the west of Yuendumu Community. Her paintings are often titled Ngapa (Water) Dreaming. Puyurru usually features dry creek beds which are water soakages or naturally occurring wells. Shanna uses both traditional iconography as well as an underground view of this water soakages to represent the Jukurrpa (Dreaming) associated with the site of Puyurru and its elements in her paintings. Shanna works closely with Warlukurlangu – Artists of Yuendumu and it is through them that her work is now featured in several galleries around Australia.
