Emu Dreamingby Vanessa Nungarrayi Charles
This particular site of Yankirri Jukurrpa or Emu Dreaming is at Ngarlikurlangu. The Emu travelled to the rockhole at Ngarlikurlangu to find water. This Dreaming story belongs to the Jangala and Jampijinpa men and the Nangala and Nampijinpa women. In contemporary Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography is used to represent this Dreaming, associated sites and other elements. Emu's are usually represented by their foot prints, arrow like shapes that show them walking around Ngarlikurlangu eating bush raisin. In the time of the Jukurrpa there was a fight at Ngarlikurlangu between an emu ancestor and Wardilyka (Australian Bustard) ancestors over sharing the bush raisins. There is also a dance for this Jukurrpa that is performed during initiation ceremonies.
